About:

Streethawk was conceived, as countless great Vancouver born ideas are, over a few pitchers of beer on the patio of the Cambie. Aiming to serve music lovers both at home and abroad, we'll keep you in tune with local happenings, while always keeping an eye on the bigger picture. We are local and concerned with Vancouver and its highlights: the bands that come, the venues they play, the things that shake "the scene." We'll also bring you record reviews, essays, interviews, and news from other locales that's just so exciting, we think everyone should know about it. Our aims are simple, our staff is honest, and our pictures are pretty. We love music and we want to tell you about it. We welcome feedback, hot tips and presents. we like presents.

If you haven't already figured it out what we're all about, we'll talk about anything from X to Xtina, from Radiohead to Radio Berlin, and from Wolf Eyes to Wu-Tang. If you've ever followed around a Dave Matthews Band tour you might want to apply elsewhere. While we welcome submissions from anyone, anywhere, we're based in Vancouver and focused on the city we love. So, if you happen to reside in the GVRD, that's a plus.

Since we currently run zero ads, we make zero dollars in ad revenue. This baby is a labour of love. If we ever find ourselves rolling in money you can count on being cut in on your share, but for now you'll have to be content with the odd promo CD or free show. Send stuff to: editor[at]streethawkmagazine[dot]com.

Staff:

Managing Editors

Kaitlin Fontana
Kaitlin is an award-winning writer whose work has appeared in SPIN, Event and Off-Centre Magazine, among many others. She divides her time mentally between Vancouver and New York City, and physically between Vancouver and the inside of her head. She is certain that just about everything that matters about life and music can be found on the album Exile on Main Street by a little band called the Rolling Stones.

Quinn Omori
Quinn is a regular contributor to Off-Centre, Color, and Discorder Magazines, who also pipes in with music picks for the Tyee website. His future goals include: losing to the RZA at chess, attending the Sleater-Kinney reunion show (whenever it happens), getting blind drunk with Amy Winehouse, and finding a job that doesn't make him want to die inside a little more everyday. He keeps a blog called From Blown Speakers.

Album Review Editor

Luke Simcoe
In addition to being the album review editor for Streethawk, Luke is a regular contributor to Douglas College's The Other Press. He enjoys early morning tennis, beard cultivation and guilting his girlfriend into writing this bio, which he can no longer attempt to take credit for.  His cat, Sabbath, is currently in heat, but that problem will be rectified once he receives his next paycheck from the Burnaby Public Library, where he's been slinging books since the age of sixteen. When he's not taking photos, he can be found haunting the hallways of Simon Fraser University's downtown campus and listening to At the Drive-in on his iPod.

Features Editors

Aaron Leaf
Aaron is in that early twenties phase where the world seems depressingly bleak yet incredibly exciting. He has a degree in journalism but thinks most media are bullshit. He's been to almost every state in the U.S.A and has driven across Canada twice, Western Europe once and China often. He is currently fixated on the cultures of the Deep South and collared greens in particular. When nobody's around he enjoys practicing his Georgia accent in the mirror and dreams about owning a platinum grill.

Jackie Wong
Jackie is an aspiring culture writer by night and food media concubine by day. When Streethawk started up, she was feeling down, listening to Dr. Dre's "Still DRE" on loops. The snuggly wonder of Streethawk helped change her tune from "massive guns" to "whistle interlude." It's been a beautiful friendship.

Live Review Editor

Mark Pickersgill
Over the last couple of years Mark has been trying feverishly to combine his interests in music, writing, visual arts, civic politics, and cultural studies. So naturally he did a Masters degree in Community Planning at the University of British Columbia and wrote a thesis about Vancouver's live music venues. Now he dreams of nothing more than to one day open a music venue of his own and to help bring "the rock" to those in need (keeping in mind that "rock" is not a style of music, but a state of mind).

Copy Editor

Aleksandra Brzozowski
Raised in a Vancouver suburb on a steady stream of ABBA, the Carpenters and choral music, Aleksandra currently thrives on a well-balanced diet of dance music, quirky songwriters and anything British - gorging on beloved 80s nostalgia only every now and then.   As she readily admits to her concerned parents, she probably does spend far too much of her urban planner's salary on music (especially when it teams up with her travelling bug) but she hopes that Streethawking will make up for this indulgence.   A remarkably short girl for such a long name, you've likely seen (over) Aleks at a recent show; if not, watch out for her up near the front - she'll be the one dancing.

Webmaster

Jordie Yow
Jordie currently resides out of country and tends to not do much these days. He is the most technically nerdy member of the Streethawk team and is responsible for everything in that regard.  He has been (and will likely again be) a radio DJ and regular writer for a variety of Vancouver music rags.  His interests tend towards nerdery, in many realms, but primarily computers and music.

Contributors

Katya Ballos
Katya is currently finishing her Sociology degree at UBC. She just returned from spending some time in Montreal, where she studied at McGill, volunteered for Pop Montreal and saw some lovely shows. She enjoys music and learning about how different bands are connected through collectives and side projects and thusly is a little obsessed with Broken Social Scene. Other than school and music, Katya is mostly kept busy working with kids and planning her next travel adventures.

Shea Dahl
Shea has a BA in Religious Studies from the University of British Columbia. Ironically, he has parlayed that achievement into a job embracing blasphemy, by working in a position that demands he is frequently in contact with rock and/or roll (among other genres and things). As an avid sports fan, we at Streethawk hope that he will one day investigate and reveal the reason that highlight reels are so often soundtracked by such terrible music.

Luisa Irene Fisher
To be quite honest, Luisa isn't sure how she got this Streethawk gig. One minute Quinn was mocking her youth and penchant for unicorns, and the next he was all, "Write for us!!" Luisa also spills ink for Grounder, Youthink, and her local suburban newspaper thing. She doesn't enjoy writing about herself, not least in the third person - but for the sake of internet immortality, she loves art and words and hippie causes, dislikes cars, and dreams of everywhere but Vancouver.

Trevor Gilks
Trevor is a UBC graduate and current student at BCIT. His interests include listening to music, watching movies, and eating food. He has no other distinguishing characteristics, nor does he have any accomplishments of note (ed. he's also far too modest). He is a very sporadic contributor to Streethawk, but perhaps will be more involved in the future.

Mike Hingston

Mike Hingston was born and raised in North Vancouver. Recently he moved to Vancouver, where he still lives to this day. His work has won awards, and has been frowned at.

Josh McNorton
Josh divides his time thinking about music, listening to music, writing music, playing music, talking about music and - when there's time to spare - writing about music. Some time before 2009, Josh will either complete a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing or forget about it and move to Europe. Currently, he lives in Vancouver.

Michael Morris

Chelsea Mushaluk

Sean Owen
Despite his phobia of spiders, Sean currently resides in Sydney, Australia, ironically putting him in close proximity to most of the planet's deadly 8-legged freaks, not to mention a whole host of other animals that can kill you. An avid Radiohead fan, Sean has seen Thom Yorke and Co. far more times than can possibly be healthy. He writes the blog A Reminder.

Graham Preston
Graham is currently stationed in Melbourne where he's working on his PhD in cultural studies (focusing on hip hop, indie arts cultures, and music scenes). When he's not extolling the virtues of J Dilla or T.I. in highly academic fashion he enjoys indulging in such fine Australian traditions as choking down vegemite, being exiled from England for various forms of thievery, and searching for clips of Natalie Imbruglia in "Neighbours" on YouTube. Graham keeps the blog Regulate the Voice.

Jessica Smith

Jessica is an intern at the Metro and in UBC's Masters of Journalism program. When she gets tired of doing grunt work for "the Man" she writes for us.
